Eye Protection Norms
Eye Protection Norms
Airsoft products, as well as professional products must all comply to specific norms that allow stores as well as the consumer to verify the quality and conformity to the use of such products. Eye protections are what we will be bringing our attention today and more particularly the norms that concern them.
Eye protection goes from glasses, mesh goggles, goggles and full helmets. Airsofters are often divided as to which is the best suited to play and often chose their protection without being properly informed. In europe, the norm EN166 was developed to be the official regulation concerning eye protection. It goes as follows:
EN 166 F : Can sustain 45m/s steel bb, → 0,87 Joule (93,31m/s-1 / 306 FPS with 0.20 plastic bb). Protection adapted for games with replicas below 306 fps with 0.20 bb. The user must make sure there is no space that would allow a projectile to go in between the glass and the screen.
- EN 166 B : Can sustain 120m/s steel bb, → 6,19 Joule (248,84m/s-1 / 816 FPS with 0.20 plastic bb). The glass must be attached by an elastic and not branches. Protection adapted for games with replicas below 816 fps with 0.20 bb. The user must make sure there is no space that would allow a projectile to go in between the glass and the screen.
- EN 166 A : Can sustain 190m/s steel bb, → 15,52 Joule (393,99m/s-1 / 1292 FPS with 0.20 plastic bb). This norm is for full screens that can stop projectiles from any direction. Protection adapted for games with replicas firing below 1292 fps with 0.20 bb.
These different norms (F,B,A) are all written on the concerned protections. If you play in airsoft on fields that authorize more than 305 fps make sure your protection is certified at least EN166B as insurances will otherwise not act if something is to happen and most importantly you could be exposed to severe injuries. This implies that you cannot play with glasses that are held by common branches. It must at least be certified glasses held by an elastic as mentioned above.
You only have two eyes, why risk losing one?
If you’re ready to spend hundreds on a replica, you shouldn’t neglect your safety and invest in serious protection. Accidents come without notice and can have terrible consequences. Verify your protections before it’s too late.
